I began teaching in 1995.

I earned my BA, and MA at the University of Colorado at Denver.

What is your favorite thing about University Park Elementary?
My favorite thing about University Park is the responsible and respectful students, supportive and involved parents, and collaborative and passionate staff.

If a school day suddenly got canceled, how would you spend the day?
If school suddenly got cancelled, I would spend the day reading a good book and baking.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
If I could eat only one food for the rest of my life it would be my mother’s homemade spaghetti and meatballs.

If you were not an educator, what do you think your job would be?
If I was not an educator I would probably be an environmental scientist. I am very interested in finding ways to protect the earth and its diverse ecosystems.

What is something your students might be surprised to know about you?
I am a HUGE Disney World/Land fan! This is my absolute favorite place to vacation with my family. We have been to the parks several times and really enjoyed the Disney Cruise.

What year did you begin teaching?
I was a paraprofessional in a special needs classroom for two years prior to having my own class in 1985, which was in Washburn, North Dakota. At that time I also coached girl’s high school basketball.

Where did you go to college?
My undergraduate college experience was at the University of Mary at which time I received a Health, Physical Education and Recreation Bachelor’s Degree with a Special Education minor. Soon after graduating, I attended Minot State University and finished the coursework for my Special Education Certification which helped me land my first teaching position. Upon moving to Colorado, I have attended CSU, Metro State, Adams State, Colorado School of Mines, etc. And I received a Master’s Degree in Mild/Moderate Special Education at the University of Northern Colorado.

What is your favorite thing about University Park Elementary?
My favorite thing here at UP is the community, the time and talent as well as the easily recognized personal interest each parent has invested in their children. It is a breath of fresh air at UPark as I have been in several schools where academic growth is not ultimately the norm.

If a school day suddenly got canceled, how would you spend the day?
If school was cancelled because of inclement weather I would put my sweats on and lounge all day. I’d make a big kettle of something hot and yummy to eat and the aroma would be inviting for me to cuddle up and read a great book. If the weather was nice, that would be another story, perhaps running, riding, skiing or yard work just so I could be outside.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Answering the question about favorite foods is hard.  It is kind of a trick question because if I want to remain healthy I would say grilled or baked salmon, but if I’m going for a mood or snack food I’m all about ice cream! Sorry to the kids and parents of optimal wellness.

If you weren’t a teacher, what do you think your job would be?
Had I not gotten into education I would have been a physical therapist. It was a strange occurrence that sparked my interest in children with disabilities, and one area was a passion for helping those with limitations, especially those with physical impairment.

Now, as I grow older and am aware of the difficulty it can be at times to get up off the floor from the “criss-cross applesauce” position, I am seeing real value in therapy.
